BEIRUT: Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai again warned Sunday that nonstate arms would lead to the proliferation of illegitimate weapons, which would subsequently lead to the law of the jungle prevailing in the country. Rai’s warning comes more than a week after Maronite bishops urged the Lebanese to rally behind security forces, warning illegitimate weapons would only bring chaos to the country.
“Any nonstate arms are considered to be illegitimate that would in return draw illegitimate arms and then the law of the jungle would prevail and crimes would increase as we are unfortunately seeing,” Rai said in Sunday’s sermon in Harissa, north of Beirut.
He called on the rival political factions to engage in a frank dialogue and strike a new social contract based on the power-sharing National Pact set up by the Christians and Muslims in 1943 following Lebanon’s independence from France.
Addressing the Lebanese youth, Rai said: “Lebanon needs your voice to open a new page in its history calling on everyone to reach understanding and a real dialogue on love and turn the page of treason, accusations and hatred.”
“I call on the conflicting political parties, whose escalating and growing disputes are helping in Lebanon’s destruction, to engage in a dialogue of frankness and reconciliation and to conclude a new social contract based on the National Pact with which the Lebanese built their country on the basis of living together and neutralizing Lebanon from any allegiance to any state in the East and the West,” he added.
Since his election as the head of the influential Maronite Church in 2011, Rai has called for a new social contract to revive the National Pact, an unwritten power-sharing agreement under which the presidency is reserved for a Maronite Christian, the premiership for a Sunni and the parliamentary speakership for a Shiite. The pact also stressed peaceful sectarian coexistence between the Christians and the Muslims.
